“Raymond! Get your butt off my bed and come over here to tell me what you think about my outfit,” Bosco yelled at his step-brother as he stepped out of the restroom to examine his reflection in the mirror for the hundredth time. “I don’t know man, do I look better in red or royal blue? I say royal blue cuz that’s my color, but red stands out…maybe then she will begin to notice me…” Bosco, a tall and slim bloak just like Raymond. However, his skin is less tanned and rather than the I-too-cool-for-you look, he seems more friendly and outgoing.
“… stop being such a sissy and just wear the blue one…I’m sure nerdy Leila would like it..” Raymond said sleepily as he took another chug at his beer, trying to drown away his thoughts. However, he’s still frustrated over the whole arranged marriage idea. Like c’mon, how old is he? Eighteen and is still forced to obey under every single one of his father’s rules. This is ridiculous!
“Shut up bastard. How many times do I need to tell you not to call her nerdy Leila. Next time I'll punch you if you don't watch your mouth!" he said half jokingly, "To tell you the truth, I'm somewhat nervous since I am not even sure if she’s going to come tonight... I happen to just slipped an anonymous invitation card into her locker yesterday,” he laughed at his evil deeds, “You know what, brother, YOU should get dressed up by now, too! For god sake, this ball is meant for you to meet your future ‘wife.’ Aren’t you at least interested in how she might look like? Maybe she’s a sexy beast!” Bosco teased while combing and gelling his hair for the thousandth time.
Already somewhat annoyed with Bosco, Raymond threw the beer bottle where it smashed in pieces as it hits the wall, missing Bosco by a few inches. “Shut up! Why the hell would I care how she looks? I bet she’s just like one of those sluts I play around with!”
“Hey! You better get someone to fix my wall… or else go back to your own room and break your own shit," Bosco yelled. Raymond can be a cool guy to hang out with, but he can definitely be a jerk sometime when alcohol gets to him. "But yea, as I was saying, maybe she’s different. Stop jumping to conclusions, because I’m sure there are always girls out there who are not sluts. An example would be my one and only Leila,” he said dreamily while trying on another tuxedo. Raymond responded with a fake puking sound.
“Silly bro…. But I do agree with you, Leila is one of a kind – I can tell that she more interested in textbooks than she is in you. Didn't you say that hates you because of your playboy reputation and goofy smile.” Raymond laughed heartily. Only in front of his step-brother can he laugh the way he does right now.
“Hey! That’s why I’m trying to let her know me better tonight by inviting her here. And no, I have charming not goofy smiles!” Bosco retorted and then stuck out his tongue.
“Say, there must be something fishy about this Tavia girl. Why would girls ever agree to marry a guy whom she never met if not for the money?” he growls.
KNOCK KNOCK
“Come in,” Bosco ordered.
“I’m sorry to bother you two, Raymond and Bosco, but the ball is about to start in another fifteen minutes, and master is getting upset that neither Raymond nor Tavia has showed up down stairs yet,” Louis said politely.
“Alrighty Louis, I’ll fix him up. Tell father that he’ll be downstairs in no time,” Bosco replied confidently while rubbing his hands together.
As Louis exited, Bosco forced Raymond out of bed by threatening him that if he doesn’t get dressed in fifteen minutes he will tell Damian all about the car accident. Afraid that his father would get him into more trouble, Raymond playfully punched Bosco in the stomach before hurrying to get dressed.
“Don’t forget to put on your masquerade mask!” Raymond heard Bosco yelled through the bathroom door. What the heck? Who would want to wear a mask to a ball? This is so dumb.. or so he thought.
---------------------------------------------------------
“Leila? I..I really don’t want to go to the ball tonight..” more tears rolled down her cheek as her best friend helped her curl her beautiful long brown hair into an elegant bun, leaving a few strands of her bang hanging in the front. Leila can be a nerd, but when it comes to fashion, she's definitely the expert.
“Now now Tavia, don’t cry,” Leila tried to sooth her best friend by giving her a heart-warming hug. “I’m sorry about your family situation…but c’mon look on the bright side. Maybe Raymond Lam isn’t as bad as we heard he is. I mean, we’ve never seen him in school before so maybe he’s nice and proper just like the prince you’ve always been daydreaming about…”
After blowing her nose Tavia replied with a weak smile, “Yes, I hope so… I also hope that Ron’s as considerate as you are…. Thanks Leila.” Tavia always gets cheered up by Leila and her sweet voice. No wonder there's a rumor going around that many boys at school like her, but rarely show it since they know that they're going to get rejected by her anyways.
Returning her smile Leila said, “No problem. That’s what best friends are for.” With another twist and a bit of hairspray, Tavia’s hair was perfect. “Now put on the masquerade mask and we’re good to go!”
Tavia looked into the mirror at her reflection to see a girl dressed in a white and silver gown that hugged her curve. If a person didn't know that she's going to a masquerade ball that they might think she looked like an angel who descended upon earth. Her hair was nicely twisted into a loose bun with small strands of curled hair on the sides. Adding on white eye shadow, she looked perfect. “Wow, I can barely recognize myself, Leila… You should quit working towards becoming a pediatrician and just major in fashion!”

“Stop teasing me Tavia,” Leila smiled. On the other hand, Leila is wearing a strapless sparkling pink dress that goes up to her knees. Her hair left down in soft curls. Then she heard a car honking outside the house. “I think the Lam’s got a limo for us,” she said as she peeked through the window curtains.
Tavia sighed before she slipped on her heels, grabbed her purse, and headed out to that despicable fiancé of hers: Raymond Lam.

Fifteen minutes later, Raymond walked downstairs in a black tuxedo to find the mansion decorated into a palace. How his servants to transform this massive place in mere hours was beyond his imagining. Then scanning through the crowds of people entering, he realized that he couldn't recognize people since everyone was wearing masquerade masks.
He then felt a tap on his should, “Raymond sir.”
“What is it Louis? Does father wants to see me or something?” Raymond asked impatiently. The only people who were not dressed up nor wearing masks were Louis and several body guards who’re standing near the doorways.
“Actually, Master just left with Mistress. He just received a call and needs to go to Thailand to take care of some ‘business.’ He will be back tomorrow night and had told me to warn you to behave yourself tonight,” he said.
“What ever,” Raymond replied unenthusiastically as he waved Louis away. Business? That thought made his scoffed. He bet his father’s out in Thailand to make treaties with the triads there just so they can cooperate on illegal drug dealings. He sighed at the thought of himself having to one day take over his father’s place to become the new leader. Would he be doing the same things? Committing the same crimes?
After walking around for a couple of minutes, he realized that many of the girls there were models whom his father have slept with a couple of times behind his step-mother's back. However, he can't help but notice that they're winking at him. Dodging several of the girls' attempts to flirt with him, he then walked over to the food table to grab a glass of vodka. What is there to do besides drinking? As Bosco once said, just drink away the unpleasant thoughts and you’ll be happy. Sure, he didn’t feel at all pleasant even after he get drunk head over heels. Bosco can be such a liar sometimes…. Unintentionally he walked out to the gardens – looking up the night sky to find it pitch black with no stars. Just like his life, he thought, dark with no lights to guide the way…. The thought made him furious so he threw the bottle into the nearby statue, creating a loud racket as the glass smashed into pieces…
“Ssir, are you alright?” a girl said in a soft and soothing tone. Doesn't that voice sound familiar, he thought.
Raymond then turned around to see who’s "spying" at him. And it was her…
