In a blink of an eye, the masquerade party had ended, and now comes morning. Dragging myself across the house, I made myself some breakfast and left for school. I didn’t even bother taking the effort to cook something for my so-called father; I bet that he was out playing cards all night and is now too drunk to find his way home. Whatever though, I don’t give a damn. Given that he’s the type of father who would even dare breaking into my piggybank to steal the salary I earned from two jobs, I do not feel that he deserve my respect. Besides, a wise person once said, you must give respect in order to get any, and that’s exactly how I feel about him.
Looking at my watch, I noticed that it was ten minutes till school starts. Not surprised at how I always let my mind wander, I jogged over to my run-down motorcycles, turned on the engine and hurriedly downtown where King’s High School is located. King’s High School is the best private secondary school in Hong Kong, so I guess it must be a miracle for me to get a full scholarship to attend here knowing that my grades weren’t the greatest in middle school. People often compare me with Leila, who also got a full scholarship to King’s because of her perfect grades and outstanding performance in every subject, including playing the violin in music class and getting a black belt in karate class. Yes, she is unbelievable.
Darn it, it’s already five minutes passed nine. Mr. Chen, my English teacher will definitely give me a detention for he is the strictest here at King’s. I dashed my way into class 4-B, bumping into a few sophomores while making way through. As I stepped across the threshold, I closed my eyes and bowed my head down, hoping that Mr.Chen would just get on with the ranting about how important it is for students to be on time. However, there was nothing. Surprisingly when I looked up, Mr.Chen was staring straight in my direction for a second, and then continued on with his reading on Hamlet. Taking this to my advantage, I hurriedly took my seat behind Leila, who was deeply engrossed in the play to acknowledge my presence.
When the bell rang, Leila finally looked up from her book to greet me, “Hey Tavia, what’s up?” she said happily. Seriously, I find it weird how Leila can be serious in one second and out-going in another. As I began to tell her the whole deal about how Mr.Chen didn’t notice my tardy, I heard him call my name.
“Tavia!” he yelled from his desk. Mr. Chen is a middle-aged man with a protruding belly, and thick-rimmed glasses. I can also tell that he tried his best to comb his hair a certain way to cover up the growing bald spot in the middle of his head. “…Tavia, are you even listening to me!?”
“yYes! I’m sorry Mr.Chen….” I replied quickly. I can’t believe my mind was at it again.
Scoffing at my response, he went on to repeat what I had missed, “As I was saying, dear, I graded the essay exam that we took yesterday on the first part of Hamlet. I am sorry to ask you things but, I really want to if you have even read the book?” Digging his hand in the drawer, he took out the booklet I turned in yesterday after class and handed it back to me. “Here, I want you to rewrite this, and this time, make sure you know the difference between Gertrude and Ophelia.”
“But sir, I thought you never allow re-takes- ” I said, but was cut off by him again.
Taking off his glasses and rubbed the lens with the end of his shirt, he replied, “- well let me make an exception this time…. especially for the Lam’s future daughter-in law….” Okay, so now things are making sense…
For the rest of the day, I noticed how nice the teachers are treating me compared to every other day. Well first of all, it must be the rumor of me getting married to Raymond fucking Lam is out so that all the faculties don’t dare to mess with me since the school is well-funded by the Lam’s family. Second, they’re afraid that they’re going to get jumped by my “fiancé” and gang of goonie. Like sure, they will stick up for me when I don’t even know how their leader looks like in the first place.
I also noticed that girls are giving me weird glances. It was as if I’m some kind of deviant child who committed a taboo. Trying my best to ignore those looks and whisperings, I hurried down the hall by keeping my head low while trying my best to dodge people in front of me. Just when I was about to enter the cafeteria to meet up with Leila, I bumped into someone, hard.
Knowing that I was the one who crashed into that person for I wasn’t watching the people in front of me, I apologized. “I’m sorry, I didn’t mean- ” Looking up I see myself face to face with the school’s head cheerleader, aka the schools’ biggest slut: Fala Chen. Damn, can my luck get any worse? First, it’s that stupid marriage thing which I don’t even have time to think it through, then the school acting all weird (teachers who’re usually mean are now friendly like little puppies, and girls who usually say hi to me are acting like bitches).
“Who do you think you are, bitch! Do you have eyes..crashing into me like that?” she screamed. Before I know what was happening, I see people forming a circle around us as if trying to cheer us on to a fight. “Do you see this shirt” she tugged at the hem of her tiny strapless top, “Rayray got this for me for my birthday… and now, it’s all covered with your slutty germs!” Okay, this has to be going too far. All I did was bump into to her, she doesn’t need to get all upset about it, geez. And talking about slut….
“You know what, Fala? I said I’m sorry, you really don’t need to make a scene out of this.” I still remembered back in grade school when we were best friends, how we like to hold hands and place hop-scotch together everyday. Well people change I guess and as the years progressed, she began to think that she’s all high and might just because her family got wealthy from their business. I know that she can afford plastic surgery and I can’t (I don’t even think I need them!), and so what!?
“Tavia!! You stupid bitch! Stealing Rayray from me… You’re just interested in his money, aren’t you? You cheated on your boyfriend just to steal mines!! How low can you get?!” she yelled in my face. Hearing this, tears began to cascade down my cheeks without me noticing it. I hate this! I hate this so much. Why can’t I just live a normal life and away from this one where everyone hates me? I want to leave; I want to leave this place….
Before I knew what was happening, I felt a stinging pain on my cheek… How dare she falsely accused me, and now slapped me! I was this close to fighting back when reasoning dawned on me. If I fight in school, I’ll get kicked out and lose my scholarship…. I can’t fight back. Looking into Fala’s eyes I can she that she was still raging with anger, mustering the energy to slap me again when…
“Hey! Why the hell are you hitting my girlfriend?” a male voice rang at the end of the hall way. It was Ron.
