Chapter 5

Opening night

Finally the night has arrived. The gallery was absolutely perfect, thank you to Shota. Although I got this nagging feeling that he didn’t do this for me, that all of this fanciness was meant to impress someone specifically. Amazingly though, I had to admit that the gallery looked so different from the night before. I wasn’t able to supervise the final designing since I got dragged by Aoi to prepare on other things.

I was wearing traditional clothes, meaning a kimono dress with a set of wooden slippers to complete my outfit. Aoi has talked me into doing this. She said it was for good luck on first times and opening nights. So here I am in my perfect blue, red and white flowered kimono, standing at the entrance and bowing to all the people who were entering my gallery. It’s a good thing Aoi also forced Tamaki senpai to wear a yukata and she herself was wearing a kimono. I wasn’t alone in this.

Few minutes have passed… I saw Toma and Erika on their formal attires. This is what it was supposed to be on opening nights, everything had to be formal as what Tamaki senpai had told me. Everyone came in wearing suits and gowns including my best friends. I loved it except that I had to get stuck wearing a kimono.

“Mao you look kawai.” Erika hugged me and kissed my cheeks.

”This sucks. I wanted to wear something as elegant yours.” I said while frowning at her.

Erika was in a long strapless evening dress, very light red in color and is accented by dark pink colored rose in the middle. I was green with envy.

”Stop acting like a brat Mao, this is your night. How’s the food going?”

”The food is great as usual but next time, don’t make it too good. It might draw the people away from my art. I noticed that a couple of people are crowding at the buffet table instead of looking around.” I pouted at her this time.

”Can I help that I’m the best chef in the world and my crews are so good at entertaining?”

”I guess not.” I nodded her and grinned.

Toma gave a small cough making a notion for me to notice him. He was wearing a navy blue suit, which as usual looks good on him. I didn’t notice that he was carrying a bouquet of assorted daisies, my favorite. He reached it out for me and I took it in my arms. They were lovely that I can’t help gazing at them.

“Those are compliments from me and Erika-chan. Can we look around now?” he smiled cockily at me and gave a small aristocratic bow.

”Sure… I’ll take you guys around.” I grabbed both their arms and headed for the nearest painting when Erika asked me about Shota.

”Mao, do you know where Shota is?” Erika said while looking around the gallery.

”I knew it!!! You just went here for him instead of me.” I exclaimed while pointing accusingly at her. She bit her lip looking too guilty for my comfort. I heaved down a sigh and gave up.

“He’s probably at the buffet table and scarfing down your food, you can go there… but you owe me one week supply of dessert.”

Erika grinned, kissed my cheek and proceeded to the buffet table. I turned to look at Toma.

“So does this mean you’re left alone with me?” Toma asked.

”Hai! You better appreciate my paintings or else I’m going to kick you out of here!” He laughed at the statement, put his arms around my shoulders and dragged me to the nearest painting that was hanging about. We were both laughing when an old couple came near and asked.

“Are you Inoue Mao?”

”Hai… may I help you?”

”We wanted to ask if we can have the painting that is in the middle and main show of your gallery. The three silhouette figures to be precise. We know that it’s not for sale, but we thought of trying nevertheless.” I shook my head at them feeling so sorry for the old couple. No matter what the status of those people are, even if they pay me their lives, I am not giving up that specific painting.

”Sumimasen… I really can’t sell it.” The old couple looked very disappointed.

”Oh well then… it was a really good piece of art. It must have a lot of sentimental value to you.” The old woman looked at me thoughtfully while saying this.

“One of the reasons why people get so sentimental is because memories are the only things that don’t change when everything else does.” Toma butt in the conversation and the old couple nodded their heads in agreement.

”It seems you have a very nice boyfriend with you who actually values deep memories. Well then, we won’t take away your memories young lady. Maybe you could leave us a business card instead so we can contact you for more of your paintings.”

I was about to disagree to the old couple about Toma being my “boyfriend” when the word Business Card registered in my head. Suddenly I was frozen on my spot due to the realization that I have no fucking business card at hand!!! I wanted to kick myself over and over again for being so careless as to forget this important thing. My mouth was about to open and say another “I’m so sorry” and also facing the fact that I was being so unprofessional in front of a prospective client when a hand reached out to the old couple with a business card.

“That’s her card, you can contact her there.”

I turned to see that Tamaki sempai was there on his Yukata and Aoi in her flowery pink kimono. She was grinning at me while sempai’s face was still serious and all business look. I was caught off guard but also thankful that they were there. I have to remind myself later to thank them deeply in my heart. The old couple thanked us and turned around to look at the paintings in the gallery once more.

“Thank you thank you thank you!!!” I was hugging Tamaki senpai and Aoi was chuckling at his side.

”I knew you wouldn’t remember this because of your self-absorbed attitude. Here, you take it and hold on to it tightly.” He thrust the business card into my hand.

”Hai!!!” I saluted at him while still grinning.

”We’ll just head for the buffet table … I heard that the food is great.” Aoi said and walked with Tamaki senpai.

”You were saved ne?” Toma said while looking at someone from the other side of the gallery.
When I looked at that same direction, I saw Erika and Shota talking and laughing together. They were having fun and here I was in my own gallery show… instead of her supporting me and pampering me with compliments there she was spending her time with Shota. Suddenly my mood turned sour. Toma gave me a side glance.

“You’re jealous aren’t you?”

”Pffft… me jealous? As if. When did I ever get jealous?”

”Since always?”

”What always? I am not a jealous person!”

”Speak for your self Inoue. You’re already throwing daggers at Shota. If looks could kill, he might have been dead by now. Why are you even so possessive?”

”I am not.”

”Yes you are.” He looked at me this time. I pouted at him.

I hate to admit it but I knew I was. So did Toma. I figured he just wanted to rub it in my face.

”Fine! I am jealous… but that’s because… because… because she won’t be cooking me good food anymore!!! That’s what always happens when she gets her boyfriends.”

”Baka… I know that’s not the real reason. But I also know that you’ll get over it sooner or later.”

”I know I will. At least just let me rant for now ok?”

A couple of hours have passed, thoughts of Erika getting a new boy friend quickly faded my paintings where getting red tagged one by one. I was sharing my soul to everyone. It seemed so melancholic thinking about that, but then again, I was never a melancholic person. I’d be bitching to them instead if they didn’t take care of my artwork.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
My best friends already left, Toma had a business trip to Okinawa the next day while Erika went with Shota. The gallery was almost closing and I was about to change into my normal clothes when Tamaki senpai and Aoi told me to wait a bit for some guy. I was very annoyed for some reason, meaning my itchy-hot-discomforting kimono was REALLY bothering me.
“Who’s this VIP? I want to strangle that person for making me wait. Why do we have to wait for a person like that? I should be the VERY IMPORTANT PERSON in this room. When he comes I won’t sell him anything. You guys serve him yourselves. I’ll be sulking away in a corner. You know how fucking hot this Kimono is? I’m itching all over and I can’t even walk properly.” I was clearly pissed off and was acting like one.
I was being self-centered, my gratitude for the incidence earlier was gone. But the two seemed unaffected of my ranting. I guess they’ve been so used to me always raving to them. Since the ranting didn’t work, I went to face Aoi and Tamaki sempai then started to bow and plead for them to let me go.
”I so want to get out of this kimono!!! Aoi, Tamaki sempai… why don’t you just meet him instead of letting me stay here?”
”You are the artist and he clearly told us he wanted to meet you.” Tamaki sempai said with an insistent tone.
”What’s he’s name anyway?” I annoyingly asked when suddenly a voice I was familiar with, spoke behind me.
”Gome for being late… daisies were out of the flower shop I went to and I just had to find another flower shop for these.”
Slowly I turned around to look at the person who was speaking. There I was, rooted on my spot, shocked to see the man from yesterday whom I thought was an illusion. Abe sempai…
“Konbanwa Mao-chan… how have you been?”
He smiled his lopsided smile at me and my heart almost stopped right then and there.
