He was looking hard at me, then all of a sudden he pulled me close to him that our faces was just an inch apart. I could smell the coffee he drank minutes ago, his breath lightly brushing my face and his eyes half closed as he looked deeply in my eyes. My face felt hot.
“Nani?” I whispered ever so softly as not to break the moment. After drawing in a deep breath he quickly asked.
“Can I kiss you?” his face moved closer than an inch, his lips almost touching mine. This time, I was breathing hard as my heart went beating faster. With our lips almost touching and the warm feeling of his breath cascading my lips, all I could do was close my eyes in reply.
“There’s no need to ask.”
A few seconds after I said that, he swiftly took hold of my shoulder and drew my face to his. Our lips met… it was THE normal kiss at first. Then he his right hand slid to my back reaching for my neck. As if he can’t have enough of my lips while his left hand stayed on my waist. After a few seconds his hand that was on my waist slipped under the back of my shirt touching my bare skin. I gave a small gasp surprise and because of this his tongue entered my mouth which made the kiss go deeper than I expected.
We were intently kissing while he was slowly feeling my skin with his bare hands when all of a sudden I felt something vibrate near my chest that I got startled and immediately broke the kiss.
“What was that?!” I looked at him wide eyed.
“Dammit…” he cursed softly and fished out his cellular phone. I smacked my head for being too stupid.
Of course! A business man wouldn’t be left without a cell phone.
The kiss was too good that it carried me away. Abe sempai gave a sign of apology, I just smiled weakly at him.
”Mosh mosh? Hai… Hai… But I am doing something very important right now...” he said with an irritated tone.
Oh… so he thinks I’m important… Or rather getting me in bed is important? Pshh… I don’t care which is which. As long as he said he’s doing something important right now which naturally involves me so that means I’m what he is DOING IMPORTANT right now.
I was fiddling the heel of my shoe with my head bent down and smiling at my self. Then I heard him sigh exasperatedly. My head snapped back to look at him.
”Souka. I’ll come as quickly as I could. Just make sure that this is as big a problem as it looks like, or else you are going to be fired. Prepare the conference room then. Ja.” He flicked his phone close and looked at me apologetically.
“Gome Mao… something came up in the company even at this god forbidden hour. I’m really sorry… can I see you on your gallery show on the second night?”
I’m crushed.
“It’s ok. Are you sure it’s REALLY that important?” I pulled his tie and seductively batted my eyes at him.
“Yes it is… if it wasn’t I wouldn’t leave you here like this.” He held both of my shoulders while looking at me. It was my turn to sigh exasperatedly.
“Alright… I’ll just see you after the gallery show.” I said while pouting at him.
“That’s good to hear. Gome… Mao.” Then he gave me one last kiss, hurried and less passionate.
After Abe sempai left me in front of my door, I don’t know whether I should be relieved because my under wear was a mismatch or I should be disappointed because nothing happened.
I should have just forced him inside and went right on with it!
Shrugging away those stupid thoughts I entered my apartment and took a blank canvas under the spiral stairs which leads to my bed, then headed for my work area. I have my insomniac nights, and this was definitely one of them. Making an artwork seemed the best idea to let time pass.
My apartment is spacious and almost empty but it feels like home. The whole second floor is where my bed is located, only a bed and nothing else which by the way I seldom use because of my laziness on climbing the spiral stairway. I usually lay a futon near my work place so I can take a nap and resume my art which is more convenient. The work room is located at the very left corner of my apartment, at the very right corner is where my kitchen is, which consist a mini fridge and a stove that is barely used since I rarely cook. The only menu I know is instant noodles, hard boiled eggs and rice that is cooked in a rice cooker. The microwave is my salvation, since I live off mostly from Erika’s cooking. My fridge is relatively empty, except for a couple of beer, a bottle of water and a half rotting apple.
Mental reminder, I have to trash that apple later.

The second night of my gallery show, more people came in. Even those who came last night was back to look at my work. I didn’t expect that my gallery would be this crowded. Fortunately this time I wasn’t wearing a kimono, but sadly I wasn’t wearing a gown either since it’s not an opening night anymore. Nevertheless as long as people came pouring in, a pink spaghetti strapped velvet top, skinny jeans and a pair of high heeled Liz Claiborne thong sandals can keep my mood up. Adding up that I’m meeting Abe sempai after closing, nothing can ruin my mood.
While I was walking here and there greeting people around a hand touched my shoulders and skimmed to my waist.
“Hey there…” It was Abe sempai’s voice.
“Sempai, when did you…”
“Please just call me Abe from now on.”
"You… are you sure it’s ok to call you that sempai?” I asked teasingly, he suddenly grabbed my waist and pulled me closer.
“Of course… now that we’re officially dating… we are dating aren’t we?” He asked uncertainly.
“Yes we are.” I nodded at him like an eager kid.
“Hai! That’s good to know.” He gave me a peck on the cheek.
“When did you arrive?”
“I just arrived a few minutes ago. I just stood right there at that corner,” he pointed at the left corner near the gallery entrance, “…and I just looked at you until I can’t resist the urge to walk over here and touch you again.” He was smiling mischievously at me.
“By the way, I saw a painting last night that really caught my attention. It’s a painting of a man and woman sitting on a bench park, charcoal made, very simple…”
“That painting is sold.” I cut him short, because I felt partly guilty for selling it.
“Eh? Who bought it then?”
“Aoi did…” That painting… it was actually meant for him. It was supposed to be his… It never occurred to me that things like this would be happening.
“Souka… I remember that you told me you’re going to make me a painting for the graduation. Was that supposed to be it? That painting definitely suits my taste.”
“Hai, but you never showed up for the post graduation party. So I never got to give it, besides you have been AWOL for almost 4 years that I never thought we’ll be seeing each other ever again and be having this conversation…” I was feeling bad for selling that painting that I didn’t notice I was blabbing already, and then he put his arms on my shoulder erasing my worries.
“It’s ok Mao… it’s my fault for doing that ne? I had to fly to U.S. for a job interview so suddenly that I lost all my contacts here in Japan. Gome for being AWOL, especially to you.”
A smile crept onto my face that all I could do was grab his waist and hug him sideways while his arm was on my shoulder and grinning goofily at me.
“Mao? Abe sempai?!?” It was Erika with Shota at her side. She was looking incredulously at me and Abe. I just smiled and batted my eyelashes at her as if mentally sending her a message, I HAVE FINALLY HOOKED UP WITH ABE, THE Abe senpai.
“I thought you weren’t coming here?”
“Are you saying I shouldn’t be here?” Erika raised her eyebrow at me.
“No, that’s not what I meant. Of course you are always welcome here my favorite chef!” I disengaged myself from Abe and went towards Erika and gave her a hug then she whispered something in my ear.
“Details Mao… I need details.” Nodding at her and hugging her more tightly I was feeling like a teenager who needed to gossip some juicy details with her best friend at a slumber party.
After introducing Shota to Abe, Erika and I went straight to the washroom and talked. I told her everything that had happened the night before, the confession, the kiss and of course the entire almost-getting-laid incident.
“You almost got laid??? With Abe sempai?!? I mean… he… you… Oh my God. He’s like your MAN during college wasn’t he? You were his dog! God Mao! I can’t believe he liked you all along even though he had a girlfriend back then.”
“I can’t believe it either. This is too much for my hormones Erika. Way TOO MUCH! But the thing is… I’m so fucking loving it!!!” we were both squealing and giggling like high school girls in the washroom when my cell phone suddenly rang.
“Mosh mosh?”
“Hey, Mao-chan! I’m heading back to Tokyo. Lets’ go meet up at that Karaoke bar you were dying to go to last week. I also brought someone with me.”
“But Toma-kun I have…”
“No buts! Come on Mao, we haven’t even celebrated your opening night. Let’s go and relax. Tell Erika to come too… you can tag Aoi and Tamaki if you want.”
“I also have someone to…”
“Gome Mao, I have to go. See you at there by 9 pm. Ja!”
What the heck was that conversation?
“Toma just invited us on a drinking session at the Karaoke bar I was talking about a week ago.” I told Erika with a troubled look.
“I see, so what’s the problem then?”
“Abe sempai and I had set up a date after I close up the gallery.”
“Souka… but it’s so seldom that Toma invites us out.”
“Yeah… I know and he also mentioned he brought along someone with him. I wonder whom he met in Okinawa?”
“I’ll bug Abe senpai that you guys should just come along, he won’t resist the charm of a chef like me.” I laughed at Erika while she tugged on my arm as we left the wash room together.
