Chapter 8

Diva night

After closing up the gallery, Abe gladly agreed to come to the bar with us to meet up with Toma. Even Aoi and Tamaki sempai came along, and Shota who’s tagged by Erika had no choice but to come with us. We entered the bar and looked around for Toma who reserved seats for us. He was at the other side of the room waving his arm at me and Erika. As I went closer to the table there were a couple of people with him, I knew some of them from his office but oddly enough, one girl sitting at Toma’s side was smiling shyly at me and Erika. She looked awfully familiar, I just can’t remember where or when I’ve even met her.

“Saeko??? Is that you!?? Is that really you???” Erika, who has a better memory than mine, was the first one to gush over our high school batch mate.

“Hai. It is me Erika-san… I heard that you’re a chef now and Mao-san is a painter.” She smiled at me with that all-teeth-smile she always did during high school.

Hmmm… Saeko turned out cuter than she was back in High school. So she’s the one that Toma was talking about.

Introductions were made between our companions, when it finally came to Abe’s turn Toma looked at me surprised. I gave him a cocky smile while taking Abe’s arm and lacing my fingers with his showing Toma that I have finally hooked up with Abe. All he did was nod knowingly at me then diverted his attention to Saeko.

Huh? That’s all I receive? There’s no eyebrow rising at me or even signs of asking more details? That’s weird…

I was still looking at Toma when my hand was tugged, I realized that I got caught up on thinking about Toma’s reaction I almost forgot Abe. He was tugging at my hand, motioning for me to sit beside him at the couch. We were occupying most of the space that extra chairs were set up and a long table was laid. A couple of minutes passed we were all drinking our hearts out and chatting along. When Erika suddenly voted that the last person who downs their drink would have to sing in front of the crowd. Everyone was able to grab their drink ahead of me which eventually made me THAT last person. Then they all started cheering Mao, unbelievably even Abe was cheering with them. In a few seconds I was hopelessly being pushed up the stage by two of Toma’s male officemates. They were all clapping and cheering by now.

Oh god… if only they knew that I could only sing in front of Toma and Erika. There are other people in this bar for heaven’s sake!!! Oh god… If there is any other source of powers or strength or god given voice… let it be mine!!! Please let it be mine!

I looked around for some miracle to happen… nothing. Most of the people in the bar joined the clapping and MAO-chanting. All I can do was inhale the smoke polluted air into my lungs to give me more courage for whatever craziness I’m about to do next.

I took the mike on stage then saw a bandana hanging on a chair in front of me. Gingerly picking it up without even asking permission from the owner I started to clear my voice and began to ready myself into singing, “Can’t take my eyes off you” a song from the movie “10 things I hate about you” sang by an American artist named Heath Ledger, who unfortunately died, may his soul live on for being such a good artist. This is the only song so far I have mastered in a karaoke, the pitch is also not that high so I could definitely wing it!

When the intro came in, I held the mike in my left hand while holding the bandana in my right. Turned my back from the audience and slowly raised the bandana. Then I started singing…

“You're just too good to be true…” the people in the bar went dead silent.

I felt like a diva with my back facing them with one hand raised. Slowly turning to face towards my table, I pointed a finger with the bandana towards Abe…

”Can't take my eyes off you… you'd be like Heaven to touch, I wanna hold you so much...” I acted like hugging and caressing my arms. Then people started whooping and cheering at Abe while he was grinning there at his sit like a little boy.

“At long last love has arrived and I thank God I'm alive… You're just too good to be true…
Can't take my eyes off you...” by this time I was swaying my waist and seductively pointing at him.

When I finally reached the chorus of the song I walked over the table with the mike in my hand.

“I love you, baby and if it's quite alright… I need you, baby…To warm a lonely night…”

I started to grab Abe’s tie to make his face go near mine, when his face was just inches away from me I let it go and slowly retreated then danced in front of him while singing. Swirling the bandana in his chest and his face, the crowd in the bar was going wild. I could hear whistles and cheers from the four corners of the entire bar.

“I love you, baby. Trust in me when I say…Oh, pretty baby… Don't bring me down, I pray. Oh, pretty baby, now that I found you, stay and let me love you, baby. Let me love you.”

I went back to the stage and then danced throughout the whole song while some people I don’t even know went on stage just to dance with me. When the song finally ended I could hear people clapping and cheering. I dipped my body to make an aristocratic bow at the crowd as more applause, whistle and cheering came in and some were even shouting “More! More!!!”

God no more! I couldn’t handle another song like that.

I headed back to my table and sat quickly beside Abe feeling a bit sweaty and flushed to my roots. Grabbing the glass of iced tea in front me, I gulped it down as fast as I could.

“Wow… that was something Mao. I guess you never really changed ne? You’re still the same girl who doesn’t back down on anything.” Saeko said to me after I finished my drink.

“Yeah… I guess I didn’t. By the way you’re looking good Saeko, what have you been up to lately? What’s your work now?” I ask her while brushing a sweat away from my forehead.

“I’m a consultant/analysis in a company. That’s how I met Toma-kun in Okinawa. Both of our companies had the meeting. I thought he wouldn’t even remember me since the three of you have been hanging around so much with each other during high school. You guys were like the impenetrable three.” She giggled as she said this then nudged Toma at his side. He smiled at her and shrugged.

Toma kun? Since when was Toma, Saeko’s Kun??? Have they been this close after that meeting in Okinawa?

Thinking about this I didn’t realize that I was slightly frowning at Saeko. Erika probably noticed this that she called out to me from across the table.

“Yo, Mao… what’s up with that forehead of yours?”

“Eh? Oh… I’m just feeling hot. With my performance and all.” I fanned my face with my hands as she nodded at me.
