It all started when I was six years old. I was walking around the school when I met him. He was an average boy who in fact loves to tease you around and go off beating him at the same time. He was right about seven at that time. After that first meeting, we often go to the beach near us and hang around. And as a matter of fact, he was my next door neighbor. I would tell him all of my secrets and he would me his, we were just lucky that we have meet each other, but it’s just too late.
My parents and I will leave Nodeulseom in a week and it’s hard to say goodbye, especially to the people who I love the most, and particularly to him. It was so sudden, and I can’t blame him for hating me.
I told him everything, everything about me getting off this island and going to Seoul, he cried, he actually cried. I wanted to comfort him back then but it’s time to go, the last thing I knew was I threw a paper on him which indicates ‘I’ll come back, I promise’
Ten years have passed and I forget about him, I want to come back so badly and how I wish to be with him, to be with the boy I truly loved. I forced my mom to come back to our old place, where silence was a virtue; a place where all your sadness will be washed up by the shores, and to come back to that specific place where I founded love. My parents actually agreed and after a week, we arrived at Nodeulseom, my home town.
“Danbi!” my mom screamed, “It’s time to go, you’ll be late” my mom enrolled me into a school where I could continue my studies even though I’m here in the province, I quickly stood up, excited on what’s going to happen this day, and hoping to see him again.
I clenched my bag on my shoulder, eaten breakfast and brushed my teeth, I am ready to go. I waved my hands and told my parents that I’m going. They both nodded and wishing me luck in school. While walking I saw a boy who was sitting right beside a tree, a cherry tree to be in fact and he was reading a book. He was wearing a uniform, but I don’t know which school he enters, and in any way I have to catch up to my time. I finally reached my school; it’s full of students with different races, some are Japanese, Korean and some are even from Europe. I didn’t noticed a guy walking towards me and we both bumped into each other,
“I’m sorry” I bowed, he didn’t even looked at me, but by when he was gone, just as I realized that he was the boy who I was staring at earlier, at the cherry tree. I sighed and quickly went to the principal’s office to get my schedule.
Mrs. Park, who was the school’s principal lead me to my respective room, I felt something weird and awkward, I saw him again, the boy who I met earlier, I didn’t even know his name but he looks familiar. My adviser instructed me to introduce my self before going to my particular seat,
“Hi, I’m Lee Danbi, nice to meet you” I smiled, “Please sit just right in front of Rei Hyun” the teacher instructed, I just nod and saw a girl waving her hand, which means she’s Rei Hyun. But unfortunately I am sitting beside that rude guy, who doesn’t even talk to me, but I want to know him better, so I might as well start,
“Hi, I’m Danbi” I said, reaching my hand towards him for a shake,
“Kim Jonghyun,” he said, he first stared at my hand before giving it a shake.
Kim Jonghyun sounds familiar, but I haven’t met him before.
After sometime, I’ve been thinking about him, bling-bling was his nickname, I actually forgot his real name after several years. It was our break and Rei Hyun was my only friend,
“Come on let’s eat” She asked, as she grabbed my hand and we walked towards the cafeteria,
Rei and I saw a boy being bullied by Jonghyun’s group, Rei said that they were SHINee, a group in our school, who bullies everyone, any time and in any place. I just can’t stand bullies, because I am a victim, when there’s no one I could count on this is what I actually did,
“Hey, what are you doing?” I asked, walking towards them,
It was Minho, Onew, Taemin, Key and Jonghyun, who was bullying the poor boy.
“Who the hell are you?” Jonghyun asked, staring furiously at me,
“Who am I? I am your worst nightmare!” I said, as I punched his face, I am not that actually boyish, I just can’t stand people hurt, and being bullied.
“That was actually harsh, Dan-Dan” Jonghyun said, Dan-Dan?! There is one particular person who calls me that, and that person is
“Bling-bling?” I said, he smiled, and stood up,
“You’ve forgotten my name didn’t you?” he again asked, as he walked towards me,
“I am looking all over for you and I finally found you” I said, as tears roll down my eyes,
“You can easily find me, that’s your promise right? To come back?” he said, as he was comforting me, hugging me tightly.
“I was really relived when I first saw you, I thought you will never come back” he said, tears were forming into his eyes. As we both pulled out from our compressed hug, he simply thanked his friends.
He actually planned for this; my parents knew how much I loved him, until now. So the essentially called him and told him that we will come back. He was actually mean but when he heard about me getting back to him, he accidentally changed, changed from being a bully to a gentleman, but this doesn’t change anything, I haven’t told him what I feel about him, and I just can’t accept the fact that I may not be the woman he loves.
By the end of the day, I walked home, I haven’t seen him after the break, even in classroom he’d remain silent, and he was probably busy.
As I was walking I saw a flashing light, blinking, in the distance. I followed the light in curiosity and I was hoping that it wasn’t a trap for something. When I reached the end of the light, I was caught off guard and mesmerized by the view, it was the beach which Jonghyun and I were playing several years ago, and now I am back here in this particular venue for nothing. I heard some voices at the shore,
“Who’s there?” I asked, nervously,
“It’s me bling-bling” he said, it was Jonghyun. I was quickly relieved knowing that it was him.
“Danbi, come here, I want to show you something” he grabbed my hand and dragged me towards the shore,
He clapped twice and the lights started appearing, I saw Rei with a board on her hand and the letter I was written on it, then I saw Minho with the same board with the letter L on it, then Onew with O, Taemin with V and Key with E. then I felt Jonghyun’s hands were not on mine, he rushed to his friends and pulled a board with a letter U on it,
“Read it out loud!” Jonghyun exclaimed, I nodded and stated the three words indicated on their boards,
“I L-O-V-E U” I said, and again tear rolled down my eyes, I just realized the fact that I am the one who Jonghyun loves the most, and then he went for me, hugging me tightly,
“I was so surprised when you just left me behind, I haven’t said that I love you yet, so I am so beleaguered when I knew that you were coming, I quickly planned on this and I am really happy when I you clinched on my trap” he said, he inhaled and let out a sigh, and continued, “So Lee Danbi, Would you be mine?”
All I can do is nod and hug him tightly, and then he again said those three magic words softly in my ear,
“I love you.”
